This summer, Housing Action Council was glad to welcome Alex, a student at Pelham Memorial High School, as an intern. The internship gave him hands-on exposure to the many different functions that support affordable housing work. Investing in young people and cultivating the next generation of leaders is central to HAC’s mission, and we’re proud to help students like Alex build a foundation for future civic and professional engagement.
During his time at HAC, Alex assisted with housing counseling data entry and HUD 9902 reporting, logged applications for affordable housing opportunities, and supported a range of administrative tasks. He also researched and wrote a policy summary on recent housing-related reforms passed in Albany, including changes intended to reduce delays and costs associated with the development of affordable housing.
Reflecting on his experience, Alex shared: “I learned that affordable housing is more complex than I thought.” His takeaway captures something central to the internship experience — that affordable housing isn’t just about building homes. It also involves policy, regulation, data, community needs, funding, and coordination among many different partners.
